Heritage Conservation and Adaptive Re-use

Comprehensive understanding of different definitions of ‘heritage’, of tangible and intangible ‘living’ heritage and global approaches to heritage conservation and more recent concepts of circular economy and cultural economy related to the sustainability of heritage. It covers issues related to the historic areas such as the urban fabric and building morphology, land value, land distribution, as well as the heritage patterns, territorial domains, and the sustainability of commercial and productive heritage activities, the value of the living heritage. It engages student in case studies to illustrate how to mitigate the negative aspects, and activate potentials for economic development, as well as achieving social sustainability. The course emphasizes the importance of historic areas as an asset focusing on the social, psychological and economic perceived value of this heritage and the importance of redirecting the approaches towards intervening in these areas, discussing the different ways to save them from losing the heritage by turning them into potentials for economic development and social sustainability.
